Kyle is a TREE CITY
The people of Kyle & our City Council SAVED THE PORTER OAK because we all love our natural resources! The Arbor Day Foundation recognizes wonderful cities like ours with their TREE CITY USA program, and Kyle is a perfect candidate.
Arbor Day Foundation WebsiteMany neighboring cities (Buda, Hutto, Pflugerville, Bastrop, Boerne, New Braunfels, etc) have been designated Tree Cities by the foundation, showing that the Hill Country cares about trees, and Kyle deserves that same recognition.
City Tree Board
The City of Kyle already budgets enough on qualifying tree expenses to meet the financial requirements of the Arbor Day Foundation. The only other major requirement of Tree City USA is that we create an official Tree Board to oversee various tree-related city issues, which can be made up entirely of citizen volunteers. Optionally, this commission can be chaired by a licensed professional arborist employed by the City of Kyle.
Our Tree Ordinance
The existing Kyle Tree Ordinance already meets the standards of the Arbor Day Foundation but there are some ways for us to strengthen our ordinance and be an even cooler Tree City.
- Implement better enforcement mechanisms.
- Increase tree mitigation costs for developers.
- Stronger protections for older trees.
Celebrate Arbor Day
The Mayor & Council have previously made proclamations for Earth Month & similar holidays & have hosted related city celebrations. The last, and most straightforward, requirement for Tree City USA is that the City of Kyle must make an annual Arbor Day proclamation and host an official celebration of the event, on the last Friday in April, in solidarity with the Arbor Day Foundation.
We can also celebrate Texas Arbor Day, which is the first Friday in November due to the cooler temperatures.
Please join us on August 19th to thank the Kyle City Council for saving the Porter Oak & ask them about becoming a Tree City USA!
